Raised in the culturally diverse city of Vancouver, Kira Yip grew up in an environment that naturally nurtured her interest in and appreciation for connecting with different cultures and understanding the multiplicity of human perspectives. She continued cultivating this curiosity at the University of British Columbia, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature and a minor in Psychology. During her undergraduate schooling, she engaged with literature and language in a global context through a variety of genres, cultural lenses, and theoretical approaches. In tandem with her studies in Psychology, which afforded her insight into the complex nature of human behaviour, she acquired an integrated understanding of how literature and language construct and examine the human experience. Her keen interest in broadening her perspective led her to pursue a study abroad experience, where she had the unique opportunity to immerse herself in a new culture and learn in and beyond the classroom.
Her desire to gain a deeper understanding of the world in the context of culture and language through her education and experience has played a significant role in shaping a holistic approach to teaching. Her teaching journey began in early childhood education, where she was inspired by the Montessori pedagogical values of nurturing natural curiosity, cultivating a love of learning, and preparing children for success in not only academics but all aspects of life. These key principles continue to guide her teaching philosophy with students of all ages. In her classroom, she believes in fostering an adaptive and open learning environment that gives students space to grow and develop at their own pace.
